Hyderabad has been home to me for a very long time.. It is a place where something is always happening, the rush to meet deadlines, the pre-brunch rush hour traffic, the neverending replenishment of ambitions. Amidst all the chaos there still was a strange sense of charm to it , the chaotic co-working spaces, the endless conversations over Iraani Chai, and the ‘OH SO Famous’ midnight Biryani had become a newfound obsession of mine. But amidst all this chaos I remembered a promise that I made to myself; to find inner peace, to find calmess around all the chaos and that’s when the universe pointed me towards Bir Billing.
Bir Billing, a village located in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. A.K.A The Paragliding Capital of India. A paradise surrounded by green valleys, Tibetan Monasteries, paragliding skies and something to do with that stunning calmness that attracted me. I found Bir through an acquaintance and instantly I knew that this is my calling. I bought the tickets to Bir and stayed at an amazing backpacker hostel, The Bunksters. I had the most amazing time Bir, I did everything I could starting from paragliding to an adventurous hike to Bhongary waterfalls to visiting Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The valley not only has a scenic view but is also culturally rich.
I moved back to Hyderabad but it felt as if I had left a part of my soul at Bir and instantly decided to quit my job in Hyderabad and move to Bir to start my life afresh. If you had told me a year ago that I’d trade it’s crowded cafes and chaotic streets for sunrise hikes and stary skies in Bir I would have laughed. But here I am working at the same place I stayed at a year ago. Life has become simpler where I can get more things done. I often bump into travelers, writers, all kinds of families and people from all around the world.
One thing I realized is that Bir Billing isn’t just about paragliding and pretty landscapes- It is about presence. It taught me to be calm and still be able to bring method into madness, it taught me to breathe, to enjoy silence to have deeper conversations to find peace within.
Maybe someday, Hyderabad will always have a place in my heart. But for now, Bir and The Bunksters is my home. It’s wild and calm at the same time. It’s where I rediscovered what i truly Value.
If you ever feel stuck, overwhelmed, all drained out– come to Bir. Stay a week, stay a month. Who knows? You might not even want to leave.
From city lights to starlit skies– sometimes, all you need is a change in altitude to change your attitude.
