The objective of the research was to study the biological effects of each eating plan, in particular the effects of cholesterol, and the function and inflammation of blood vessels.
As oppose to weight loss, the diets were designed for weight maintenance. After a month, the researchers found that those on the Atkins diet had the so-called bad LDL cholesterol on average go up slightly. Those on the South Beach and Ornish plans, however, saw their bad cholesterol go down.
As for those on the Ornish diet, they saw the best effect on the function of their blood vessels. This effect was related to the amount of saturated fat the participants had been eating. As the saturated fat intake declined, the function of the blood vessels improved.
What does this mean for everyday dieters? Namely, if your were able to lose the weight on any of the diet, you would likely see improvements in your LDL and the function of your blood vessel.
